One of the reasons for us to have a house in the Algarve is that it is a beautiful area with a beautiful rocky coastline, that includes several beautiful beaches. Inland you can find beautiful old villages and towns where it sometimes seems as if time has stopped. Silves, Monchique, Vila Do Bispo and Tavira have retained the wonderful atmosphere of the past. The people in Portugal are just as friendly as the weather is nice.
In bars and restaurants you really get the feeling of being a guest, moreover the Algarve comes with a delicious cuisine especially when it involves fish. There is something for everyone in the Algarve. Quiet villages, small bays and busy beaches, beautiful nature or an amusement park or a lovely night out until the early hours. The Algarve is a very diverse holiday destination with wonderful holiday weather.
A bit of background
Lagos (Arabic: Zawaia) is a city and municipality in the Portuguese district of Faro. The municipality has a total area of 213 km2 and had 28,890 inhabitants in 2007. The city of Lagos has approximately 19,000 inhabitants.
The majority of residents in the municipality live along the coastline and work in tourism. The inland is a lot less populated and most people work in agriculture and forestry in this area. Lagos is located approximately 35 kilometres east of Cape St. Vincent: the most southwestern point of the European mainland.
The city came as Zawaia (meaning “Lake”) in the 8th century in the possession of the Muslims of Al-Andalus, who had conquered it by the Byzantines. In 1174 the local wāli gave permission for the construction, outside the walls of the city, of a church in honour of John the Baptist. This church is the oldest in the Algarve. King Alfonso II of Portugal managed to put the city into Portuguese hands in 1241.
In 1444 a covered slave market was built in Lagos, the first in Europe. A slavery museum is now located in the building.
